Success Stories

Healthcare Optimization
Assisting public healthcare agencies in a short time period, BI has completed several significant tasks for public healthcare agencies that delivered:
  • 28 Minutes each day in time savings per clinician through Healthcare Information Technology (HIT) Systems Optimization -BI staff shadowed clinicians on actual floor rounds observing how the hospital staff actually interacted with the electronic health records (EHR) system. Based on these observations using the iRise simulation technology, BI modeled potential improvements to the EHR-S. The changes were validated and refined in hands-on sessions with the clinicians and are projected to save each clinician 28 minutes per day.
  • Earlier identification of significant changes affecting care delivery through Trends Forecasting and Monitoring - To assist our clients in identifying developments in medical practice, regulation and policy, patient & staff demographics, technology, and financing; BI assembled a staff of subject matter experts in several domains supported by a cybrarian ("electronic library specialist") who monitored developments. This review team met each month and assessed relevancy to the client's mission, the probable impact, cost, and timeline of the major developments from the past month. Based on these assessments, significant developments were referred to the client for further analysis and distribution throughout the rest of the organization. By providing a rapid, independent, and timely assessment of developments our client's ability to proactively manage change was enhanced.
  • Improved HL7 Compliance through HL7 Compliance Audits - For the VHA, BI conducted an analysis of the VistA EHR-S to assess the degree of compliance with the HL7 EHR functional model. Based on the results of this analysis, BI prepared recommendations for changes (both process and technical) to the VistA EHR-S. Based on these recommendations, the VHA will be able to prioritize and plan HIT investments maximizing the return on investment and achieving full HL7 model compliance.
  • Fostering Innovation - BI has worked with clients to create innovation repositories and to identify critical requirements for a successful innovation program. For one client, the BI team developed a framework for evaluating and assessing innovation tools and then conducted on-hands testing of several. Based on our findings regarding the implementation and operation of these tools, BI developed recommendations that will be used to guide preparations for future innovation programs. For another client, BI has assisted in the program management and implementation of a repository containing innovations nominated by healthcare practitioners and agencies across the country.
